Overcoming Obstacles

This last weeks conversations and crazy weather have had me thinking about obstacles. As a coach I talk to people a lot about obstacles (time, energy, injuries, etc). One thing is for sure: life is full of chaos. It seems that in each stage of life we have to adjust to the current chaos. What carries me through the chaos? It really is the support of my accountability group and my family, in addition to the convenience and sustainability of the plan. I don't have to be hardcore. I just have to be real and push play. Life will push play on me...so I better do something in return.
Many believe the main obstacle we face is time. In regards to daily exercise, I don't believe that. I have exercise programs that are only 10 minutes per day and we still come up with excuses. You watch tv a heck of a lot longer than that.
Others say the biggest obstacle is money. I don't believe that either. New house, new car, nice clothes, eating out...money is not the issue. We live in a world where we throw money at everything we want. In fact, businesses and health insurance companies invest in your health to save money in the long run. You may see healthier vending options, health screenings, corporate challenge opportunities, etc at work. Or your health insurance company offering incentives to log your exercise for gift cards or other fun prizes. These companies see future cost savings...the opportunity to stop paying those high medical bills for heart disease, cancer, diabetes, etc.
I believe our main personal obstacle is results based. We want the scale to immediately drop and a new pant size within a week...are we being reasonable? What if we committed to ourselves for the long term?
Make a plan this week to work on yourself. If you don't know where to begin, please ask. Simply fill out the contact form and I will be happy to help you find a plan that fits your needs best.
Here's a recap of this year's obstacles for me. A move to a new city, traveling, kids at home, surgery, death of a family member (no photo necessary), injuries while running and my body just completely failing while out on a trail. Through all of these things my support system has carried me through and helped me see positive successes on the other side. They drive me daily. I'm not going to lie and say life will be easy, but all your efforts will be worth it!
